Orbit Clock

How might we visualize the shape of time?

The Orbit Clock is a clock inspired by the constant, unchanging flow of time. The clock is comprised of 4 parts: a base that houses all electronics, a dish that rotates around in a gyroscopic motion, a center magnetic marble to hold the dish in place, and a magnetic marble on the rim of the dish that drives the rotating motion of the the whole system. The motion of the marbles and the dish are a physical representation of a very abstract notion of time. The design draws on motifs of cycles, motion, and repetition, making this centerpiece clock simultaneously soothing and quietly dynamic.

Quick sketches from both early ideation states and later in concept formation. Different rotation and tilting mechanisms were explored, as well as different ways to represent motion and passage of time.

A servo motor and micro controller move a rotating arm around. The rotating arm has two magnets: one in the center of the circular path and one that follows the circumference of the circle.

Marbles can be added or taken away to change the pattern of motion and sound of the experience. As long as there is a marble in the center of the clock face and on along the edge, it will takes one minute to complete one rotation.
